1.) Realism is being used to give the viewer the effect of actually being in Iraq and on the missions with the bomb squad. I think this give a more in depth feel of what it was actually like to be in Iraq and the actual dangers of the war in Iraq. I have always thought Iraq was one of the least dangerous wars. I always thought the soldiers never really saw much action in Iraq. This film showed me some of the dangers these soldiers faced on a daily basis whether it be from an enemy or themselves. You see how the soldiers didn't really know who there enemy was and had a tough time deciding who was. Also you see how the soldiers were greatly affected psychologically and how they couldn't adjust to life outside of the war.
2.) I think the biggest take away was the time of the class itself. If you could in later years get the class to be a full year, I think students could get more out of it. I think you should try and focus on eras. I think you should sit down and say that you are going to pick a movie based off of the early civilizations, the 1800's, the early and late 1900's, and more modern times. I think this could balance out the eras of the movies that you watch. I also think that you should take time and watch movies from the silent film era, early film, and modern film to see how it has changed. Also I think you should show some indie films and documentaries to show how film can be affected.
I completely agree with your statements in the first question, Hunter. I honestly thought that Iraq was not a very dangerous or scary war, but this movie changed my mind as well. I also think you have very good ideas for the class next year. Your idea about doing it in different eras is a very good one and I really think Mr. Leier should consider doing that.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you suggested how the class should be set up in the way of eras. That would be a cool way of going about how film progresses and learning history at the same time.
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog! The movie opened my eyes to the dangers of the war as well. The things that the soldiers face on a daily basis are unreal. It was a good point you made about breaking the class down into different parts; each focusing on different subjects with different eras.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say the feeling you get watching this movie is like your actually there. Makes you feel as if your really apart of the bomb squad over in Iraq. & I agree when you say this class should be year long and my just one semester.
ReplyDeleteHunter, I agree with your answer for the first question. Also I like the suggestion, however it would work best if the class would be a full year long because there is almost no way they could fit that many movies in one semester. Hopefully they can get the class to be a full year because the students could get so much more out of it.
ReplyDeleteHunter, you have a great point when you say how the class should be run in the future. Setting it up by era's would make things so much different, and I personally would have loved to see the evolution of film from the silent film to our present day cinematography.
ReplyDeleteHunter, I agree that this class should be a full year. I think there is a lot that this class can expand on if it were a full year. If the class spandex over a year going through different ears would be interesting. They could have a greater understanding of how film has progressed over the years.
ReplyDeleteHunter I completely understand where you are coming from on the questions about the biggest takeaway from this class, but I don't think suggestions is what was meant by the question. I do however agree with your ideas for next years class. They sound really good, and I never really thought that the Iraq war was so dangerous until I watched the movie.
